Dudley Caving Club

Location: The Old Ruiton Windmill, Stone Mill Walk, Upper Gornal, Dudley, DY3 3XL.

This Midlands based caving club meets every Thursday evening at the Old Ruiton Windmill, Stone Mill Walk, Upper Gornal, Dudley, DY3 3XL from around 8.00pm.

If you are a caver and would like to join us, or you’ve never been caving but think you would like to try caving as a sport, then just turn up or contact Keith Edwards for more information.

The windmill is well equipped for all aspects of caver training.

The club was originally called Dudley Cave Rescue Team and it was formed in 1966 as part of the Dudley Auxiliary Fire Service after a number of incidents in the underground limestone caverns around Dudley. In its early years it was called out on several occasions. Soon the activities of the team spread to mine and cave exploration throughout the UK.

In 1999 the name of the club was changed to Dudley Caving Club. The Club these days is a general caving club and members regularly visit all of the main caving regions in England and Wales: the Yorkshire Dales, Derbyshire, North and South Wales and the Mendips.

Membership is open to anyone over 18 years of age.

Club membership runs from 1st January to 31st December and costs £18.

New recruits join as provisional members. Provisional membership costs £9 and lasts for a minimum of 6 months and a maximum of 12 months. After 6 months provisional members can apply for full membership.

All cavers must have third party public liability insurance to cover caving and caving related activities. Suitable public liability insurance can be obtained from the British Caving Association (BCA) through the club. This costs £17 per annum.

Through the National Lottery “Awards for All” scheme we have purchased personal caving gear for novices – helmets, lamps, fleece under-suits, PVC over-suits, knee-pads and belts. This gear is available for provisional members to loan free of charge for their first six caving trips. After this members are expected to purchase their own personal equipment.

All other equipment necessary for caving trips is available to full members to loan free of charge.
